Kanab Trivia:

Utah has five National Parks: Arches, Canyonlands, Zion, Bryce and Capitol Reef  - all are relatively close to Kanab, in southern Utah.

The controversy surrounding the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell is often cited as the beginning of the modern-day environmental movement.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, located five miles north of Kanab, is the largest sanctuary for domestic animals in the nation. They rescue abused and abandoned pets and either find new homes for them or allow them to stay at Best Friends for the remainder of their lives. There are about 1800 animals living there at any given time. The Sanctuary covers about 3000 acres in beautiful Angel Canyon. Best Friends welcomes visitors and offers tours of the Sanctuary.

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) is home to one of the largest recent discovery of Paleontology (Dinosaur bones) in the world. GSENM also hosts a rare double arch in stone called Grosvenor Arch and is located in Kane County.

Kanab's Main Street, Highway 89, has a National Scenic Highway designation.

Moqui Cave (located 5 1/2 miles east of Kanab) is home southern Utah’s largest collection of dinosaur tracks.

Kanab History:

Kane County was named after Brigadier General Thomas L. Kane

The first inhabitants of Kane County were the Anasazi ~ also called Moqui (Mo-kee) Indians

Kane County and Arizona Strip became the home to Paiute and Navajo Indians.

Settlement in Kane County began around 1858, with a few ranchers living in the region

Jacob Hamblin built Fort Kanab in 1869

'Kanab' means 'place of the willows' in Paiute language

Kanab is now known as 'Little Hollywood' after 90+ movies were made there

Kanab elected the 1st all-woman town council in 1912 (This was even before women had the right to vote in the United States)

Highway 89 was begun in Kane County in 1921 and serves as main highway in county

Prior to 1921, Kane County was the most inaccessible county in the state of Utah.

The 1st car to arrive in Kanab was in 1909 - after a three-day drive from Salt Lake

The United Order was practiced in Kane County and first organized in 1874 in Orderville

The United Order was a communal system - products of all industry were used by all the members of the community.
